Ferreier, Cap Haitian

Board member, Michael Schapiro has been working in the town of Ferrier for the past 5 years and has been able to develop a small permaculture plot in the town. The project has been continually maintained by local organizations and is used as demonstration plot. The trees will take 15 years to come to maturity, but, the process of developing the site has been a great resource in teaching locals about the environment and concepts of sustainability Project Description HSDF would like to continue to help the land owner maintain the plot and provide resources to allow for its use as an educational outlet.

Beneficiaries
The entire town of Ferrier will benefit from the project through education and through a green space. North Haiti is slowly becoming a desert and is beyond 99% deforested. Mike also developed a PowerPoint presentation, revealing the poverty and culture of the less advantaged areas of the world, mainly Haiti. In conjunction with local leaders in Eugene, OR, along with three high school classrooms, they have rallied their efforts toward one common goal, to alleviate the world of its suffering through sustainable assistance. Currently, the project has spearheaded an educational initiative, sponsoring 30 impoverished children in the village of Ferye, Haiti, and maintaining a yearly benefit at Sheldon High School. Over 80 challenged young adults, along with 10 faculty members, collaborate yearly on a benefit sale in which proceeds are donated to local and international charities. This year, we were able to sponsor the 30 children mentioned, and next year we plan to implement new and sustainable strategies for development in running water and agriculture.

The project involving this Haitian village, where the average daily income for a school teacher is roughly .25 cents, is dependent upon the participation of not only HSDF, Michael and the teachers of Sheldon High School, but the children in Eugene, and their devoted efforts to help this struggling country. This winter, Michael will be leading a small group to Ferye to further assist the current sponsorship program as well as research possible future projects in conjunction with local community groups.
